How to Get Rid Of Booklice

Controlling Psocids, or booklice, in the home can be achieved in a couple of different ways. But first, it’s important to understand why they are present in the first place.

Common booklice are generally found in areas of high moisture and humidity.

In homes and businesses they can be found in damp basements, windowsills and doorframes with ongoing moisture problems, in books and paper products, in plants, or around damaged or leaking pipes.

All booklice need moisture to survive.

In older homes, booklice can be found in books that are stored on shelves or in boxes. They are particularly attracted to older books that contain starch and glues that lead to mold growth.

Psocids can also be found in newer homes, where drywall hasn’t yet had the chance to completely dry out. Minor molds that grow in wall voids can support booklice populations in newly constructed homes.

The key to reducing booklice is to reduce the relative humidity in the area or areas where they are present.

⭐ Reduce the relative humidity to 50% (or less) in basements, storage areas, and areas where booklice are present. *The lower the humidity, the faster the reduction.

⭐ Allow household plants to thoroughly dry out between watering.

⭐ Store books in airtight containers, off the ground, and include silica or a similar moisture-absorbing material.

⭐ Remove molded food items and clean spills that retain moisture from cabinets and pantry shelves.
