They throw dirty clothes in a pile on the floor instead of placing laundry items in a container.   • Educate students or institute rules and regulations that promote a clean campus.
  • Put a focus on trash containment and removal. Open trash is an open invitation to cockroaches but those pests don't need open trash to be lured in. All it takes is the scent of a dirty trash can or dumpster. It is important to contain the trash in sealed receptacles and keep those receptacles clean.
  • Keep clutter to a minimum both outside and inside. A cluttered storage room is a playground for cockroaches. Also, be aware that cockroaches are fond of creased or used cardboard. Dispose of card shards and empty boxes as quickly as possible and be careful to not allow cardboard to become moist.
  • Keep drains clean. This is a primary breeding location for cockroaches.
  • Refrain from leaving wet, dirty mops on floors after cleaning is done.
  • Keep track of mandatory deep cleaning. Surface cleaning is not enough with these insects as they hide in the gaps and cracks around kitchen equipment where food and liquid spills provide desirable sources of nourishment.

Moisture Control

  • Eliminate all sources of condensation. Areas of high humidity are desirable to cockroaches.
  • Trim tree branches to allow light into areas of dense shade. This will allow the sun to keep the ground dry.
  • Put space between plants to provide better airflow. This will help to keep topsoil dry after watering.
  • Loosen compacted soil that retains water after it rains.
  • Fill in holes that hold rainwater. If holes are being created by a groundhog, mole, or another burrowing wildlife, you may need the assistance of a wildlife control professional to prevent new holes from appearing.
  • Keep gutters free of organic debris and other obstructions. Repair any breaks in gutter systems. Rainwater should run down and channel away from structures to prevent damp conditions that increase cockroach populations and the populations of many other pests.
  • Repair leaky pipes, spigots, and hoses.
  • Keep leaves raked up. Leaf litter traps moisture and provides cover for cockroaches.
  • If you have landscaping that incorporates gravel, be aware that gravel has the potential to create the perfect environment for cockroaches. The sun warms the gravel and creates a space of heat underneath. The gravel prevents the sun from drying the soil, which leads to high humidity. If sprinklers, fountains, or some other water source provides additional moisture, it can create the perfect storm for a cockroach explosion.


  • Inspect window and door frames for holes created by wood-destroying pests and repair these holes or fill them in.
  • Inspect around window and door frames and use a caulking gun to seal any gaps or holes.
  • Inspect foundation walls for cracks and seal all cracks found.
    Inspect pipes and wire conduit that pass through foundation walls and seal gaps.
  • Patch broken mortar on brick buildings.
  • Put insect shields in weep holes of brick buildings.
  • Make sure all screens are in good working condition.
  • Inspect door sweeps and weatherstripping to ensure all exterior doors are protected. It doesn't take much of a gap for cockroaches to get in.
  • Trim tree branches away from rooflines. Cockroaches and other pests use these as a bridge to get to higher locations on a structure. Keep in mind that a determined cockroach can scale exterior walls to get to holes in a roofline and other vulnerable areas.
  • Keep the foundation perimeter of all structures dry and free of weeds and overgrowth. Cockroaches prefer these overgrown areas for shelter.
