For some, it is impossible to even imagine standing in an elevator. It is a condition called claustrophobia (a fear of closed in spaces).
Though this is a mental disorder, it has very real physical symptoms, like: shortness of breath, dizziness, dry mouth, accelerated heart rate, increased blood pressure, sweating, hot flashes, shaking, trembling, chills, butterflies in the tummy, nausea, headache, numbness in extremities, choking sensation, tightness in the chest and disorientation.
In extreme cases, those with this condition may even lose control of their bowels or faint. Living in a constant state of fear (also called anxiety) has a powerful effect on the body and can lead to chronic illness.
Here is another anxiety disorder for you: Katsaridaphobia. Don't recognize it? This is generally a word that only extreme suffers of this condition have even heard of.
It is a fear of cockroaches. And, just like claustrophobia, this disorder can produce physical symptoms. In fact, it has the same symptoms.
When someone with katsaridaphobia is told that they are standing in a house that has cockroaches, it is as if they stepped on that tiny elevator.
Adrenaline spreads through their body and they are quickly overcome by what physiologists call the "fight or flight" response. This is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat to survival.
Katsaridaphobia can be a debilitating condition that can profoundly affect those who suffer from it.
One teacher reportedly quit her job because she couldn't bear to hear students say the word 'cockroaches' out loud. It caused her to freeze in place and break out into a cold sweat.
But this is an extreme example. Most sufferers of this disorder manage their fear, and live normal lives. You may even be one of them.
If cockroaches cause you extreme fear, like the teacher mentioned above, it is doubtful you have read this far.
So, this bit of advice is for all of you who have learned to manage your cockroach fear.
